Over the past year, artificial intelligence (AI) has and continues to revolutionize many industries and raise fears around the world. Will artificial intelligence replace humans? What are the risks of misinformation and deepfakes? What are the ethical risks? As a videographer, ignoring AI and its impact on video production is the equivalent of playing the ostrich by putting your head in the sand.

In this article, I’ll share my observations on the use of AI in video production, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of AI versus Humans. Without further ado, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of AI’s role in video production.

What is AI?

If I ask Artificial Intelligence to tell me what AI is, this is what it tells me:

AI, or artificial intelligence, refers to the intelligence demonstrated by machines. It encompasses a wide range of computing concepts and techniques that enable machines to perform tasks that generally require human cognitive abilities, such as:

  • Learning: AI systems can learn from data without explicit programming, enabling them to improve their performance over time. This is often achieved through machine learning and deep learning techniques.
  • Problem solving: AI systems can analyze situations, identify patterns and develop solutions, even in complex or unfamiliar scenarios.
  • Decision-making: AI systems can process information and make decisions based on predefined criteria or learned models.
  • Reasoning: Some AI systems can demonstrate logical reasoning capabilities, drawing conclusions and deductions based on available information.

It’s important to understand that AI is not synonymous with human intelligence. While AI systems excel at specific tasks, they do not yet have the general intelligence and adaptability that characterize human beings. What’s more, AI systems often require significant human input and supervision for training, development, and ethical implementation.

The presence of AI in video production can be seen from two points of view: that of videographers like me, and that of the person or company wishing to produce its own videos.

From a Videographer’s Point of View

Just as AI helps financial investors and marketers by automating certain routine tasks and information analysis, AI is useful to video production companies like Serious Moonlight. As a videographer in Montreal, AI helps me streamline my editing and assembly process, generate subtitles, write scripts and more. In short, AI helps me be more efficient while maintaining a high level of production.

From a Business Point of View

As a business owner, the choice to produce your own videos using AI is up to you. AI is a powerful tool that can help you increase your production of corporate and promotional videos. I believe that with a little effort, you can produce videos such as instructional and demonstration videos. There are several online tools, free or not, that allow you to generate scripts and assemble images to create videos of various qualities. Through a process of trial and error, you’ll find the right tools for your needs.

However, the fact remains that you’ll have to go through a learning curve and invest time and money to gain access to some of the advanced features of your chosen tools. If you don’t have a marketing team, if you want to maintain a high level of brand awareness, if you want to bring a human touch to your videos, or if you have very little time to invest, maybe AI-generated videos aren’t for you. For example, corporate videos such as culture, branding, and storytelling videos should always, in my opinion, be made with humans by humans for humans in order to communicate the right message and emotion.

Just like in any other profession, the right training and knowledge, like that of a videographer, will help you get to the desired result more quickly. This brings me to my next point, the comparison between videos produced with AI and those produced by humans (with or without the help of AI).

To better understand the power of AI and the added value of the human perspective, let’s take a look at the key points that differentiate video production with AI from video production by humans.

Creativity and Originality

Human video creation: Humans like videographers are accustomed to unparalleled creativity and storytelling. They are capable of developing original ideas and telling compelling stories that resonate deeply with viewers. They know how to exploit humor and emotional cues to elicit specific reactions and forge connections. What’s more, videographers excel at adaptability and problem-solving, so they know how to meet unexpected challenges and guarantee video quality in various environments.

AI video creation: AI tools are getting better and better at generating content, but they generally work by synthesizing existing data and models. While AI can generate novel combinations, it may struggle to find truly original concepts or fail to capture the deeper, more nuanced aspects of narrative and cultural context.

Speed and efficiency

Human video creation: I don’t think I’m surprising anyone when I say that human video production can be time-consuming, as it involves various stages such as ideation, script writing, shooting, editing and post-production. Each of these steps requires skills and time.

AI video creation: From a videographer’s point of view, AI can rapidly process large amounts of data and automate repetitive tasks, such as basic editing, and thus speed up the production process considerably. From a client/business side, however, this may not be so obvious. Learning the various tools and basic elements of video production will take time before you can become efficient and capable of producing quality videos.

The important thing to remember is that AI can’t work on its own; it needs human input. It is the quality of this human input that will partly influence the speed of production and the quality of the video generated with AI. When properly harnessed, AI facilitates the work and efficiency of videographers by taking over repetitive tasks so they can concentrate on creative direction, decision-making, and audience engagement.

Customization and Detail

Human video creation: Human creators can tailor content to very specific requirements, adjusting their approach according to customer feedback or changes in project scope. This is particularly important in sectors such as marketing and advertising, where personalized content is essential to reach target audiences.

AI-powered video creation: AI can personalize videos according to predefined parameters, but may struggle to respond to complex, nuanced or highly specific requests. AI-powered tools often work best with clear, structured data. The more you customize your video, the more iterations you’ll have to go through before you get the result you want.


Human-created video: Yes, human-created videos are generally more expensive because of the labor and time involved. Costs also include equipment, software and, potentially, rental fees and talent. However, the advent of AI will undoubtedly reduce some of these costs.

AI video creation: In-house AI video creation is generally more cost-effective for companies, especially for basic video creation tasks. However, it will be necessary to get past the learning curve and consider the time invested in-house to confirm this profitability in the long term.

Skills and Training

Human video creation: Video production requires a range of skills, including scripting, shooting, directing, and editing. It often involves a team with different specialties. This team is used to adapting to unexpected situations, solving technical problems on the fly and ensuring video quality in diverse environments.

AI-generated video creation: While AI tools reduce the need for technical skills in video production, their effective use nevertheless requires a basic understanding of video creation principles and of the AI tool itself.

AI video creation: With AI video production, quality can vary. For complex, high-quality, brand-accurate productions, AI still needs to catch up to human creators. However, for simpler projects, AI-generated video production can be quite effective and professional.
